UK ETA: Your Essential Guide to the New Travel Authorization (Updated for 2025)
Planning a trip to the United Kingdom? Whether you’re dreaming of exploring London’s iconic landmarks, venturing into the Scottish Highlands, or simply passing through on a layover, there’s a new travel requirement you need to be aware of: the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).
This article will serve as your comprehensive guide to the UK ETA, providing all the essential information you need to navigate this new system. We’ll cover everything from eligibility and application steps to tips for a smooth and stress-free experience.
What is the UK ETA?
Similar to the US ESTA for Europe and the UK, the ETA is a digital travel authorization that allows citizens of visa-exempt countries to enter the UK for tourism, business, short-term study (up to six months), or even just to transit through a UK airport. It’s essentially a pre-clearance system that enhances border security and streamlines the entry process.
Important Note: The UK ETA officially went into effect on January 8, 2025, for many non-European countries, including the US and Canada. For most European countries, the requirement begins on April 2, 2025, with applications opening on March 5th, 2025.
Who Needs a UK ETA?
If you’re a citizen of a visa-exempt country planning to travel to the UK, you’ll need an ETA. This applies to all ages, even infants and children. However, you don’t need an ETA if you:
- Hold a British or Irish passport
- Have a valid UK visa
- Have an exempt vignette
How Much Does a UK ETA Cost?
The UK ETA costs 10 British pounds for all eligible nationalities, regardless of the purpose of your visit. This fee applies even if you are only transiting through the UK.
(Important Note: While some websites suggest that transit passengers may be exempt from the fee, this is not the case as of January 2025. I recently applied for an ETA for transit purposes and was still required to pay the 10 pound fee.)
How to Apply for a UK ETA
The UK government recommends applying for your ETA through their official app, available on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. However, you can also apply through their website. Here’s a step-by-step guide to the application process:
- Download the App or Visit the Website: Start by downloading the “UK ETA” app or visiting the official UK ETA website.

- Provide Contact Information: Enter your email address and phone number.

- Scan Your Passport: Use your phone’s camera to scan the biographical page of your passport.

- Scan Your Passport Chip: This is where things get a bit tricky. You’ll need to use your phone’s NFC reader to scan the chip embedded in your passport. (Not all phones have NFC capabilities, so make sure yours does!) In two US passports that I tried it worked best on the back, not on the front where the chip is supposed to be.

- Facial Recognition: The app will prompt you to complete a facial recognition scan. (In my experience, this feature can be a bit finicky, so be prepared for potential issues.)

- Take a Photo: You’ll need to take a live photo of yourself through the app.

- Provide Travel and Personal Information: Enter your travel dates (if applicable), address, and details of any other nationalities you hold.
- Pay the Fee: Pay the 10 pound fee using a credit card or digital wallet.
What Happens After You Apply?
Once you’ve submitted your application and paid the fee, you’ll receive an email confirming that your payment has been received and your application is being processed. In most cases, the approval process is quite quick. I received my approval email within minutes!
The approved ETA will be valid for three years, allowing you multiple entries into the UK during that period. You’ll need to apply for a new ETA if your passport expires before the three-year validity period ends.
Tips for a Smooth UK ETA Application
- Apply in Advance: Although the ETA approval process can be quick, it’s always best to apply well in advance of your trip to avoid any last-minute surprises.
- Double-Check Your Information: Ensure all the information you provide in your application is accurate and matches your passport details. Errors can lead to delays or even rejection of your application.
- Strong Internet Connection: A stable internet connection is crucial, especially during the passport chip scanning and facial recognition stages.
- Update Your Phone: Make sure your phone’s operating system and the UK ETA app are updated to the latest versions to minimize potential technical issues.
